6 Fashion Mistakes That Ruin Your Classy Style

In these times when the motto is “wear whatever you want, look however you want” there are some rules that still work if we aim to achieve a classy look. What works for the media is not necessarily appropriate for the real “offline” life.  These are 6 fashion mistakes that ruin our classy style.

1. Too many accessories

A simple outfit can become fabulous just by adding a few accessories, but how do we know how many are too many?  The most important thing is to pay attention to the proportions.  For example: when wearing a statement necklace, do not pair them with long or large earrings. With a pair of small and discreet earrings is enough. Similarly, when rocking arm candy or various bracelets, go easy on the neck. 2. Incorrect sizes

Let’s forget about the sizes when going shopping for clothes. Focus on how it fits. As a general rule, the sizing of affordable brands are larger than the designer ones. Even within the same brand, the sizes vary according to the model. Sometimes, it is mandatory to adjust some minor details with a seamstress. A small change in the length of a dress, the width of a sleeve, or the size of the waist can be the magic touch to go from looking good to absolutely fabulous!

Tip: When wearing a fitted top, the bottom should be  bit loose and vice versa. For most people, wearing tight pieces from top to bottom can highlight imperfections. On the contrary, when wearing a loose outfit hides our shape. Why do women wear jeans that are too tight on the waistline? The muffin top does not flatter any figure.

3. Inappropriate attire for the occasion

Repeat after me: Gym clothes are for the gym. Yes, they are very comfortable, but going out in leggings and crop top to walk around the city or do your shopping is not appropriate unless you are running or training. The Urban Chic trend combines clothes inspired by sportswear in more luxurious fabrics such as satin, silk, tweed, etc. A especially misunderstood piece: the leggings. Under no circumstances should be considered as pants. Leggings should always be paired with a top of a suitable length. A classic look involving thick fabric leggings: combine them with a blazer, a blouson and booties or high boots.

Tip: Replacing the buttons of a blazer with better quality one will make it look much more expensive than it really is.

4. Wrong underwear

The right underwear can make or break an outfit. Two things to take into consideration are size and model. Take your time to find the right brassiere size, better if professionally fit.  Look for models removable straps that can be adjusted according to the neckline. Trying to fix a bra strap all night is not elegant.

5. Logomania

Event though logomania is a trend that resurfaces every few years, the overall result can make us look over the top. Limiting garments with large logos to a maximum of 2 is the best way to avoid an overdose of brands. Having the bag, earrings, pants, glasses, top, bottom and shoes with logos, we  will look like a walking advertisement no matter how expensive these garments are. A similar case occurs with prints. Sometimes our features get lost in colorful designs. An easy way to wear prints, is making the printed garment the focus of the outfit.  For those of us that rarely wear prints a floral dress is a good choice. To combine prints you need to take into account certain considerations (color, size, texture, among others). Mixing prints is a topic that deserves its own post.

6. Outdated closet

It is necessary to curate our closet (make it part of your “me” time). Just like our body changes, so does our lifestyle. What fit you well in your teenage years it might age you in your thirties.

Let’s allocate time to find key new pieces to add every now and then to your well-loved classic outfits. Finding what suits you and what does not it is the result of trial and error with different styles and cuts. Not sure what your style is? Read my post on how to find your personal style here.

Hair plays an important role as well. How many classmates have you seen with the same hairstyle they rocked in high school? A few at least. Hairstyle and coloring can do a lot for your image. Again, this is part of your “me” time. Don’t go in a rush, go with a girlfriend and enjoy getting your hair done. It is rewarding and fun.

Personal branding involves how we speak, dress and behave. Set a time aside and reflect on what is the image you want to project, work on it and share with the world! Remember to always be good to yourself.
