Finding your signature scent (the basics)

A signature scent is the mark we leave wherever we go. The one the represents us.

The journey to finding our signature scent is delightful.

How many times have we gone shopping determined to acquire a new perfume to end up feeling lost in a sea of possibilities? What is the best choice between an essential oil or a perfume? What is the difference between cologne and perfume water?

Here is a simple and quick guide to fragrance oils and essential oils.

Fragrance oils are confused with essential oils since the terms are used incorrectly, but they are different from each other in terms of price, chemical composition and properties.

Fragrance or fragrance oils – as they are commonly called – are chemically created with synthetic components. For this reason, they allow to create complex and unique scents.

Essential oils are of natural origin, are derived from plants. They are used in aromatherapy, a holistic healing treatment that enhances both physical and emotional health. It is crucial to look for good quality products from trusted brands and professional guidance because we absorb them through inhalation and the skin.

A fragrance oil can smell like lavender, but only the lavender essential oils hold the healing properties.

Fragrances

An important factor to consider is the concentration of the fragrance. The higher the concentration, the greater the staying power. Perfumes with higher concentration contain more essential oils and less alcohol.

This is a table for a quick explanation on types of fragrances:

Essential oils

Essential oils are natural products of vegetable, animal and mineral origin. It is a very broad topic due to the multiple uses and benefits. The Egyptians were among the first to consider them precious and artistic objects – even sacred.

Some of the essential oils used as natural perfumes are: lemon, jasmine, lavender, patchouli, rose and vanilla. If you learn a little more about natural essences, you could create your own perfume by mixing several of them. The result will be a fine, exquisite and unique fragrance.

How to use perfumes and essential oils

For best results, apply the oil or perfume in the morning after the daily bath.

Essential oils should be applied directly to the skin while most perfumes distribute the aroma better when sprayed approximately 10 centimeters away.

They are applied in the pulsating areas, which are the key points where the body generates heat and allows the diffusion of the fragrance.

Choosing a signature scent can be overwhelming, but take your time and enjoy the experience. Besides, one does not have too many of those beautiful bottles. Some are just too beautiful to let them go!

Personal branding involves how we speak, dress and behave. Set a time aside and reflect on what is the image you want to project, work on it and share with the world! Remember to always be good to yourself.
